I agree with you. And I can imagine myself doing the same in a similar situation. I don't know if I really would, but I know that if the question arose, I'd think very hard before deciding to follow such a course of action - mostly because of fears of what the children would think if they ever found out.

And that's one thing that many commenters seem to ignore - that this decision may be well have been very hard for the parents, and they may well have gone through more than enough anguish and anxiety about this decision before the blogosphere piled in. That it's very unlikely to have been a frivolous "let's see if we can make some money out of this" kind of decision.

I agree with you, with one exception: your assumption that at 3, the twins are not old enough to be taking an interest in what's going on. I am scarily sure that my 3yo, for one, would be - he certainly picks up on it when people talk about his father's illness in his presence, for example. I really hope that the parents *and* everyone who talks to them in the children's presence is careful about what they say - but sadly, I doubt it: I often see people assume my 3yo understands much less than he does, and I made similar wrong assumptions about other people's 3yos, before I had one.

I like your take on this and the fact that you researched the case. I think they should get reimbursed for the fertility procedures and the pregnancy and deliver and perhaps some twin-related medical expenses for the first year, but that's about all that seems reasonable. And that the doctor involved should have a mark on his/her record.
