I breastfed my son until he was exactly 12 months ol. Well, almost. I clearly remember giving him his last bedtime feed on the evening before his first birthday.

It was what felt, and was, right for us. I had breastfed him exclusively to 6 months (with the introduction of solids), then slowly weaned him onto bottles (no pumping for me: I get what you say about taunting with what they cannot have!) until it came to a point where it felt natural to stop.

I like "I make milk- what's your superpower" - being a Mother is just about the most amazing thing you can do. That feels special.

"And, in amongst all of this, I do feel at least a twinge of nostalgia over the thought of giving up the nursing itself. It's not an unmissable part of my life - I'm not in the camp that sees it as some sort of Amazing Mystical Indescribable Irreplaceable Bonding Experience. But it's something I've done a lot of, and enjoyed doing, and, at some point sooner or later, will have to say goodbye to ever doing again. It will be yet another part of life and parenthood that moves into the past."

I can definitely relate to that. My daughter dropped me like a hot potato (OK, it took a couple of weeks to completely wean, but it still was fairly fast) once she sampled cows' milk at a year old and decided cow juice was ever so much tastier than Mommy juice. I'd previously nursed my son until 21 months, and her decision to self-wean took me rather by surprise. A bit like being jilted, come to think of it.

Nowadays I get my BF nostalgia kicks when she comes to me with a request to feed her newborn-sized doll, who she's decided is her baby sister. "Ima...Lift up your shirt, she's hungry!" LOL!

This was a joy to read. Thank you for sharing and making me remember and for putting into words things I felt but never found the language to express. I am so proud of you. XXGranny C
